Revista 007 - SURU at Material Matters: In the Making

Pol Cunillera

Material Matters 2024 was an exciting opportunity for SURU to present our vision of circular design to a global audience, and we couldn’t have asked for a better platform than In The Making, curated by tp bennett and The Furniture Practice. The fair, held at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf from 18-21 September during the London Design Festival 2024, was the perfect stage for us to showcase not only our products but also our commitment to sustainability and innovation.

As we stepped into Room 12, we felt a strong alignment with the core themes of the exhibition—materials, geography, people, and supply chains. Our ethos at SURU has always been about rethinking the traditional linear production model and embracing circularity. We were honored to be among the international exhibitors, and our presence in the fair was a true reflection of our journey toward creating furniture and lighting that respect both nature and craftsmanship.

Our prototypes on display embodied this philosophy. With each piece, we aimed to show how sustainability can drive innovation without compromising aesthetics or functionality. The materials we use, sourced with great care, tell their own stories of regeneration and reuse. Visitors to In The Making had the opportunity to see how components and materials in our products are chosen not just for their beauty but for their ability to be part of an endless loop—returned, reused, and reborn into new forms.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stand at Material Matters: In the Making. It was a pleasure to connect with so many forward-thinking individuals, industry leaders, and professionals who share our passion for innovation and circularity.

Your interest in our products and solutions, as well as the engaging conversations we had, truly made the event a remarkable experience for us. We hope that the insights we shared help spark new ideas and collaborations moving forward. If you have any further questions or would like more information about our offerings, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the organizers of Material Matters: In the Making for creating such a well-organized and impactful event, for a warm welcome to London, and for choosing us to be a part of this edition of Material Matters: Grant Gibson and William Knight, the sustainability teams at tp bennett and The Furniture Practice, and especially to Alex Webb, Lucy Bagshaw, and Chris Webb.

Thanks also to the crew working at the fair for their constant help and genuine interest in our journey: Jess Gilchrist, Kirsteen Martin, Eliza Hogan, Sofia Collins, Anisha Blake, Lotte Plumb, Zola Blades, and Nikhil Biniwale. And a special shoutout to Sergi Peguera, the designer of our Carta Lamp, for joining us in London and sharing this milestone with us.

Looking back, Material Matters was a milestone for SURU. It wasn’t just a platform to showcase our work; it was an opportunity to engage with a community that shares our vision of a more responsible design industry. The feedback we received from the visitors was invaluable, and we left the fair feeling more energized than ever to continue pushing the boundaries of circular design.

As we look to the future, we’re more committed than ever to advancing the conversation around circularity in design and demonstrating how sustainability can be at the heart of innovation.
